Colleen Tan, originally from the Metro Washington, D.C. area, began violin at age 9 after watching her father play guitar every night and listening to many hours of violin music. She attended undergrad at Catholic University before moving to the Midwest to complete graduate violin studies at Cincinnati College-Conservatory. Colleen moved to Fort Wayne with her family in 2012 after playing with The Phil for 10 years prior. Some of her favorite musical moments have been made with the Lake String Quartet, the ensemble in residence in Yellowstone National Park each summer (yes, you should be jealous of this gig). Another highlight includes playing in the World's Fair in Lisbon, Portugal.
Tim Tan - Violin/Viola
Tim Tan, besides having an awesome name, has lived in some pretty awesome places as well. He was born in Minneapolis/St. Paul, raised in Winston-Salem, NC, and has also lived in Boston, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington D.C. and Charleston, WV. He picked up the violin when he was 5 years old and hasn’t put it down since. He studied at the North Carolina School of Arts, Carnegie Mellon, and Boston University among others. Tim can be heard every summer playing with the Lake String Quartet, the quartet in residence at Yellowstone National Park. Tim’s dulcet sounds were also heard playing solo violin with the River Cities Brass Band, a highlight of his career.
Derek Reeves - Viola
If you haven't had the pleasure of hearing Derek lend his insane violin or viola skills to a live performance here in Fort Wayne, well then you simply haven't been paying attention. Derek is probably one of the busiest musicians you will meet, not only serving as The Fort Wayne Philharmonic's principal violist, but also performing with what seems like dozens of other musical projects in the region. Born in Okinawa, Japan he has performed all over the world and even has played in the infamous Carnegie Hall. Besides Fort Wayne's orchestra he has played with the Detriot Symphony, Charleston Symphony, and New World Symphony down in Miami, Florida among others.
Ed Stevens - Cello
Ed is originally from Chicago (and by Chicago he means the less interesting-sounding suburb of La Grange, Illinois). He moved to Fort Wayne after doing time at Indiana University in Bloomington to play with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. He started playing the cello when he was five years old so he has figured out a few tricks since then. Ed spends his time running all things String Shift, which include managing the group, arranging music, booking shows, and more. He also performs regularly with a local progressive rock group The Neon Lounge.
Kevin Piekarski - Bass
Kevin brings some much-needed class to the String Shift stage, well maybe more in the musical sense rather than in humour. Another recognizable face in the Fort Wayne area, you probably have heard Kevin's jazz trio in various venues across town. When he is not tearing up the local jazz scene he is serving as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic's Assistant Principal Bass.
